To combine the technologies of BIM and BMS to establish a standardized, continuous online monitoring system for buildings, aiming to prevent blackouts caused by the unreliability of the power network.
In the modern world, electricity is a necessity in our daily lives. From cellphone communication to residential buildings, electricity plays a crucial role, leading to the creation of more smart devices. As the usage of the energy system increases, blackouts can significantly affect users’ daily lives, especially in cities.
We have seen blackouts due to power failures in Taiwan, which have raised social concerns about distribution stability. On March 3, 2022, a blackout affected over 5.49 million residents for 12 hours. The direct cause was an employee’s incompetence in operating a switchgear at the Hsinta Power Plant in Kaohsiung. This was the third accident in nine months. The malfunction triggered major power outages in southern Taiwan, and the lack of outage prevention undermined the reliability of the power network.
The combination of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Building Management System (BMS) has the potential to establish a standardized, continuous online monitoring system for buildings. This system can address the problem of insufficient building information delivery. BIM also visualizes fault components in the building power network, allowing asset management systems to monitor the safety of the power network.
