Solar cars are becoming increasingly common worldwide. Its market share even surged to around 40% in recent years for some European countries. VTC (Vocational Training Council) has been actively involved in this field for years. In 2009, VTC established a solar car team comprising teaching staff and IVE Engineering students. Their mission was to support green transportation initiatives by developing a self-built solar car named SOPHiE.

Over the years, the solar car team has evolved through several generations, progressing from SOPHIE I to SOPHIE VI, SOPHIE 6s, and now SOPHIE 8x. The team has made a significant modification to enhance performance for the upcoming Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (BWSC) 2025:

Advanced Battery Technology: SOPHIE 8x now features pouch batteries with energy density over 400kg/wh. These batteries provide a more stable power supply while maintaining a compact size and better heat insulation.

Besides, member of SOPHiE also participate in other competitions, using their past experience from the SOPHiE car, like the solar panel technology and smart grid strategy, to other applications and perform more technology that emits less or zero carbon in the manufacturing process or even operation, helping the city to reach the target of zero carbon by 2050 with different means.
